1. What is Article Search?

Article Search is powered by the Ebsco Discovery Service (EDS). Here users can view full-text journals, images, newspaper articles, citations, and e-books from a selection of the Library’s subscribed databases that are part of EDS’s subscription package.

Please note that not all of our database subscriptions are accessible through Folio. That includes anything we receive through ProQuest. For a complete list of our ProQuest subscriptions and other resources, please see our database inventory.

2. What do I do after clicking on “Please log in to see full-text options”?

Patrons of the Library can log in using the username and password they use for accessing their email accounts. If you’re using Folio offsite then you will also be asked to log in again using the same credentials. We recommend that users do this first so they can fully utilize all of Folio’s features.

3. Why do some of the full-text links say “Full-text Finder”?

The “Full-text Finder” link appears when a publication in Article Search overlaps with digital or print subscriptions in our periodicals directory. When you click on those links it will redirect you to a directory managed by Ebsco where you will see what our holdings are for that particular journal. These resources may be listed as available in full-text online, in print, or sometimes both.

Please note that the "Full-text Finder" link does not fully reflect for all of the serials in the library collection. For a more complete list of those holdings please look at periodicals directory.

4. How do the facets work?

The list of options on the left are limiters, or “facets,” that you may select to refine a search, or you can browse by using them without entering a search query. Once a facet has been selected, you’ll notice that most, if not all, of the other options in that category are no longer available. The facets can only be used as limiters, not as a way to add to an existing search. If you wish to change your selection, you can use the “x” in the grey bar where the selected facets show (above your results) to deselect a facet, and then select a different one.

Facets are unique to whatever collection you are searching through. Facets that appear when looking at catalog records can only be used to navigate those results. The same applies to facets that appear when searching Article Search results.

5. How do I find BGC dissertations and QPs?

By selecting BGC Thesis Collection from the Collections facet in the catalog section of Folio, you will get a browsable list of all doctoral dissertations, masters theses, and qualifying papers. You can also further refine the list by adding search terms.

6. How do I search for course reserves?

Folio now allows users to search through items that are currently on reserve. To find this feature, you can either select the "Reserves" button above the search bar or choose “Course Reserves” from the dropdown menu and begin a search.

From there you can navigate results further with facets for course name, course number, or instructor. In addition to this feature, users can view items on reserve in the “Catalog” section by selecting BGC Course Reserves from the BGC Collection facet.

7. How does the “Bookmarks” function work?

In a results list, or within the record for a single item, you’ll find a check-box on the left-hand side of the title. By checking the box, you are adding the item to your list of bookmarks. To remove an item from the bookmarks, un-check the box.

From your list of bookmarks, you can email yourself a list of records. This will only work if all items in the bookmarks list are selected. Bookmarks and Search History can both stored within your account so make sure to log in first to fully utilize those features.

8. What does it mean when a book is “Checked-out”?

An item can have a number of different statuses. A green status of Available means the item is freely available to retrieve from the stacks. Any yellow status, such as See Librarian, means the item is available, but you’ll need to come to the Reference Desk so that a library staff member can assist you. A red status such as Checked-Out or Missing means the item is not immediately available. In this case, a library staff member can assist you in finding the item, but it will need to be recalled or re-ordered, which can take time.

9. What does the Keyword option search?

The Keyword search pulls data from all fields, even those that are not visible to public view in the catalog record. This is to ensure users are not missing out on valuable research tools simply because their search terms are not included in the title or subject. If you are unsure as to why your results include certain items, the library staff members can help you figure it out. Please note that Keyword is the default descriptor for searching in Folio. If you want to search by a different descriptor like author or title then try using one of the Advanced Search features.

10. What's the difference between Search History and Saved Searches?

Search History automatically shows everything you search for in a single session while Saved Searches is for manually selecting which of those queries to save. In order to utilize this feature you first need to log into your account. After logging in you can select which searches to save under Search History.

11. Can I use Folio on my smartphone?

Yes! Users can now search Folio using a smartphone. The mobile version is currently only compatible on Iphone 6 (and later) and Android (Galaxy and later) This new feature is still a work in progress so if you notice any issues or have suggestions please let us know!
